Pollinators of South Pelion
A living catalogue of the bees, wasps, butterflies, moths and hoverflies that thrive across the meadows, olive groves and maquis of South Pelion, Greece.
Why pollinators matter
Pollinators are the quiet engine of South Pelion. Bees, hoverflies, butterflies, moths and many wasps move pollen between the wild olives, almonds, herbs and meadow flowers that define this peninsula. Without them, the maquis would lose its colour, and the small farms that depend on cross-pollinated crops would not survive.
Across Europe, pollinator populations are in steep decline. The European Grassland Butterfly Indicator has fallen by roughly a third since 1990. South Pelion still holds an extraordinary diversity of species — documenting it now is one of the most useful conservation actions a citizen scientist can take.

Every photo you upload to iNaturalist becomes a permanent, georeferenced record. These records flow into international datasets like GBIF, which feed indicators such as the European Grassland Butterfly Indicator and the EU Pollinators Initiative — directly shaping conservation policy.
- Install the free iNaturalist app (iOS / Android) or use the website.
- Photograph any pollinator you see in South Pelion.
- Upload — the community helps with identification, and your record becomes research-grade data.
